Shaun has been teaching my son Fabian for 3 years since meeting while both taking part in a Hampstead Garden Opera production. During the past three years Shaun has taken Fabian through ABRSM singing grades 4 and 5, music theory 3 and piano grade 3 , as well as preparing Fabian for auditions for ENO's Magic Flute, National Youth Choir and Haileybury College music scholarship. Fabian was successful in all: distinctions in the practical exams; a part in Magic Flute; and a valuable school scholarship. I credit Shaun with helping Fabian to reach his potential through his patient, rigorous, encouraging, humorous tuition. His holistic approach - suggesting reading material and Alexander Technique - has further enhanced Shaun's teaching methods and has been invaluable in Fabian's attitude and development. Shaun has been a conscientious, inspiring, thorough, reassuring, brilliant teacher. I do not hesitate to give the highest recommendation possible. I have every confidence in introducing Shaun to friends and neighbours for singing and piano tuition; they are as impressed and inspired by Shaun as we have been . Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information. Best wishes, Helen, Primrose Hill

Shaun Aquilina has been teaching my 11 year old daughter singing, at home for the last year, on a weekly basis. He is very friendly and relaxed in his way of teaching, always encouraging her to suggest different types of songs she would like to learn in the lessons. The lesson starts off with a number of short fun vocal excersise that help to free her voice. It has been wonderul to hear her voice grow and become more powerful and confident. She recently had a lead singing role in the school play. Shaun was a great help, as he was happy to help her in the lessons with the school songs. No doubt his patience and gentle, yet firm, approach helped her during the auditions and performance. She sung with such confidence it was a credit to both of them! She is now working towards Grade 3. Together they are choosing the songs that work best and the ones she prefers to sing. I would be delighted to recommend Shaun as a singing teacher. Daniella

I started having lessons with Shaun in 2015 on the strong recommendation of a friend. Shaun is a great teacher in many ways, not least because of his light-hearted and friendly approach to the lesson. He really cares about vocal technique and how to produce the best sound from your instrument and uses a mixture of visual metaphors and vocal exercises to help you achieve this. As well as being a great teacher, Shaun is also a fantastic singer and is able to demonstrate exactly how the music should sound and give you a clear understanding of how bad and good approaches to singing technique alter the sound respectively. Due to his wealth of experience singing with many opera companies, including Opera Holland Park, and as a chorus member of the Philharmonia Chorus and Ionian Singers, Shaun is able to guide you towards new repertoire that will both challenge you technically as well as suit your individual voice perfectly. Two years ago, I had the privilege of performing a selection of Mozart, Mendelssohn and Sondheim in front of a live audience for Opera Squared in Chalcot Square, London alongside Shaun’s other students. The concert gave me a chance to showcase how my voice had developed and gave my confidence a huge boost as well. I could not recommend Shaun more highly as a singing teacher and also as someone who has become a great friend as well.
Julian Woolford, Head of Musical Theatre, GSA Date: September 2019
Shaun Aquilina worked for GSA for one year (2018-19) in a maternity cover role as a Teaching Fellow in Singing. His work during this period was an extremely high standard and he was very popular amongst both staff and students. He was always punctual, took no sick days and approached every task and class with enthusiasm, professionalism, and skill. Most of his work was in one-to-one and group singing lessons. Feedback from students was extremely high and they respected his friendly manner, calm approach and ability to work with every student, addressing each issue individually. His technique work was particularly strong and the confidence of his students was developed enormously. Shaun gave excellent written feedback on student essays. The students particularly appreciated the detailed comments and the amount of care he had clearly taken over this work. He was a valued member of our staff and had excellent relationships with other staff members, being always helpful and willing to undertake additional tasks as and when required. Our staff and students will miss him enormously.
