Mr Jim Hutcheon

I spent 24 years as an Army musician, both in the Regimental Band of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and latterly in the Highland Band of the Scottish Division, as principal clarinettist in both, then on leaving the army, became a peripatetic woodwind instructor for Midlothian Council, instructing in upper woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet and saxophone.

I have since taken a career change, but now find time to take on private clariet and saxophone students once more, from beginners, to advanced students, on a regular or ad hoc basis. I have extensive experience of tutoring both individuals and groups, and have played as solo clarinet in various community wind bands, in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and so consider myself fluent in both languages!

I have also extensive experience in leading and conducting groups from 4 piece woodwind quartets and saxophone groups through to full symphonic wind bands, having been deputy director of music of Edinburgh Concert Band for a time, a position which I enjoyed immensely.

In addition to teaching, I can carry out repair work, to both woodwind and brass instruments, and whether you need a pad or spring replacing or a full overhaul, will provide you with a free no obligation quote.
