Andrew looks at music from every conceivable angle: technique of course, the student's wishes and requirements, but above all musically. When a
problem presents itself he will ask (rhetorically) what is its place
in the overall composition, and indeed where the composition sits in
the aesthetics of its time. Every time I get into a new piece, we
spend a little time listening to recordings, which enriches our
feeling for the possibilities. In practical terms he seems to have an
endless supply of techniques for solving problems. A perennial
difficulty I have is learning a new piece, and Andrew invariably hits
on the appropriate solution for someone of my limited skills
approaching a particular piece. Very often I come away from a lesson
with some door unlocked, and the renewed confidence and pleasure that
brings. Indeed, reflecting on lessons, I often felt there were many
aspects of Andrew's style which I would have done well to adopt (if I
had the appropriate personality) in my own teaching.
He is an extremely pleasant person. And our lessons are often
enriched by stories from his connections with other musicians he has
encountered in masterclasses, summer schools, and in his own career. In
summary, I can recommend Andrew wholeheartedly, with no
reservations. |

I highly recommend Andrew as a fantastic teacher who makes every lesson a very enjoyable experience. He has been my teacher from when I started to play piano at the age of 7, till now (at the age of 17). During this time, Andrew has inspired me to play; he has always been very encouraging and supportive. He has also introduced me to a wide repertoire of music. Two years ago, I achieved a Distinction for my Grade 8 and I have also managed to win several competitions under his guidance. |
