Biography

I have been teaching singing and piano since 1982 to pupils of all ages and abilities, having trained at the Royal Northern College of Music from which I gained a graduate diploma in voice and piano with special endorsement for music history. I gained top marks in my teaching studies and went on to complete a PGCE in Music for Secondary Teaching.

I worked as a music specialist in schools and colleges for 15 years, preparing pupils and students for examinations including GCSE and A Level as well as the ABRSM. My special interest was choral work, especially unaccompanied music, and my 'a cappella' style choir took part in and had success in festivals and concerts over a number of years.

When I moved area to Yorkshire in 2000 I gradually built up a private teaching practice at home. I have taught pupils both amateur and professional, with very different voices suited to very different genres, from classical art song and opera to light popular and jazz styles. I believe it is most important to find each pupil's individual voice and that flexibility of approach is vital to allow students to fulfil their potential. Exams are one avenue but they are not compulsory.

I also offer online lessons for those who find that more convenient.

I hold regular pupil concerts so that students get performance experience and confidence in a positive atmosphere, and parents and friends can see how they're progressing. Pupils are encouraged to communicate their wishes and aspirations, be they modest or challenging. Above all, I hope to imbue a sense of fulfilment and enjoyment during lessons. I want pupils to leave each lesson with a smile, feeling good inside, since singing has health benefits both mental and physical, and confident about their future singing development.
