Professional Industry Experience:
For approximately twenty years, during the 1980s and 1990s, I was a full-time freelance live session musician working for celebrity acts of the period in theatres; international hotel and cabaret rooms; cruise liners, London west end function bands and U.K. holiday centres.
Every student will have their own preferred learning style, specific musical interest and personal aspirations. It is my aim to inspire and nurture each student to achieve their objectives.
As a private guitar; bass; ukulele, and theory tutor, I have helped several students to gain their prerequisite grade 8 certificates enabling each to gain entry to university.
Many of my earlier students are now professional themselves, with one currently on tour as lead guitarist in the Hairspray touring show.
I cater for students of all ages, tailoring lesson plans in accordance with each learner’s personal musical interests.
As well as my private teaching practice, for a period of seven years, I taught Advanced Instrumental Studies: guitar and bass on the BA music course for the Academy of Music and Sound in Exeter (accredited by the University of Wolverhampton), and for a period of six years I was part of the BTEC music teaching team at South Devon College (SDC) in Torbay.
These days I augment my private teaching with work as an examiner for the London College of Music and Marking Verifier and Moderator for Wolverhampton University.
Graded Examinations & Performance Diplomas:
Grades are available via ABRSM, Trinity College London, Rockschool and RGT examination boards depending on the preferred learning styles and musical interests of each student. However, they are not compulsory – as a number of students may prefer to just play for fun!
I also offer London College of Music (LCM) performance diploma tuition for their DipLCM, ALCM and LLCM performance exams. These can all be studied for privately - a cost effective alternative to full-time University!
Together with my own Grade 8, I hold a 2:1 BSc (Hons) degree with the Open University (OU), this comprises modules in Music Technology; Composition and Performance, and Business modules based in the music industry. I have also completed a Post Graduate Music Certificate qualification - towards an MA in Music, with the OU.
During my time at SDC, I attained a Level 5 DTTLS City & Guilds teaching qualification, and a SOUD2005 Safeguarding Children and Young People qualification.
Due to my professional activity both as an examiner, and a teacher in schools and colleges, I always have a current Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service certificate.
