Hello!

Whether you’re a complete beginner, keen amateur or developing music student I can help you achieve your music goals. I teach piano, singing and music theory to students of all ages, levels helping them play their favourite music and / or preparing them for ABRSM or other graded music exams. I am a clear communicator, fun music educator and empathic motivator. Understanding the objectives of my students means I can tailor the right teaching methods to suit their needs.

My lessons are perfect for:

- Complete beginners
- Keen amateurs
- Music students
- Prospective students of all ages

In my sessions students are guided to approach a technique that is rooted in nurturing natural musical instincts and sensitivity through practical applications such as musical “phrasing” and intention. With this in mind, I encourage good musical memorisation habits at an early stage to compliment the development of musical notation reading skills (sight reading) in a step-by-step way that is easy to digest while still interesting and stimulating. I use ideas from a broad range of sources and teaching methods (Dalcroze, Kodàly, Suzuki etc.) that form the basis of our understanding of western music. While incorporating the fundamental theory, aural / listening, composition and improvisation elements into lessons, we may also look to useful and complementary ideas / techniques from further afield (world music, sound art) and from my own experiences, learning and performing of music, in order to tailor the right teaching approach to the interests, needs, level, and objectives of each student*. These practices lead to greater musical expression and enjoyment for both player and listener whatever the level, reason and occasion.

Whatever your reasons are for starting or continuing your musical education, I can help you explore the considerable benefits of music for mental and physical health, short and long term.

Quick biog:

I have 7 years experience in private and peripatetic teaching to students of all ages, as well as leading group workshops and rehearsals in a variety of settings from choral and piano workshops in schools to orchestral conducting in concert. I am very familiar with the processes and structures of ABRSM syllabus and exams as well as the generally accepted music theory and practice in the school curriculum up to University level. I am patient, empathetic teacher and I understand the importance of guidance that is organised, progressive and enjoyable!
Since graduating with a BMus Music (Hons.) degree from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2014, I have assembled a varied portfolio of work as an operatic singer, pianist, actor, composer, conductor, chorus and chamber musician alongside my teaching practice. I owe my teaching success (and enjoyment!) not only to a substantial range of high level training and experience in a variety of disciplines (having studied with and worked alongside distinguished experts and esteemed industry professionals*, as well as having performed at and toured world-leading arts institutions, festivals and stages* as a professional musician) but also to the effort, perseverance and quirks of my wonderful students who continue to inspire and surprise me each and every lesson!

Thanks for taking the time to read through, I look forward to hearing from you!
All the best,
Rachel :-)
