Biography

I learned to play drums as a schoolboy, quickly swapping my place in the horns section of the school brass band for the far more exciting spot behind the drum kit – much to my parents’ disapproval! I played with various bands through school and college but then took a break when I went to university-lack of cash to buy a kit and a tiny room in a hall of residence did cramp my style!

Sometime later, work colleagues were forming a band to play at the company Christmas party, and I happened to mention that I played the drums, but sadly had no kit. Next day, I had a call “we’ve found you some drums, we start rehearsing tomorrow!” 5 hours of rehearsals later, we played our first gig to over 900 people at a local banqueting suite. That was ten years ago and I have been playing drums with that same band , now renamed “KT and the Funtime Band” ever since, playing covers in various different styles from Elvis to Van Morrison to Scissor Sisters to current chart hits. I also enjoy playing other forms of percussion, such as the djembe, bongos and conga. I have a go at playing other musical instruments such as the guitar, banjo, ukulele and harmonica but my first love is still the good old drums!

Having taught my son to play drums, I saw the Drumsense programme as a great way to add a structure to my teaching, and am really keen to share my love of this great instrument. I believe that music should be great fun and hopefully my teaching will help people to have the confidence to have a go and really enjoy whatever they want to play.
