I am a professional music teacher with broad performing experience and a very good grasp of music theory, with years of teaching experience in most genres. I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a First Class degree in Music. Since then, I have set up my own teaching business, training and employing other teachers in Sheffield. I teach most of the above instruments at over 8 different local schools. I am the resident Bass Guitar tutor at Birkdale Private School. I have tutored pupils through their Grade 8 bass guitar exams: 100% achieved a merit or higher. I hold an up-to-date enhanced DBS/CRB check.

Genres covered: Jazz, Rock, Pop, Classical, Funk, Punk, Latin, Electronic, Samba, Reggae, Ska, Country, Metal, World... I'm always open to new ideas.

I can teach a variety of techniques: plucking, picking, slapping and popping, two-handed tapping, palm muting and double-thumbing.

One of the most important assets of any bass player is the ability to 'lock in' and keep time with a band. I have a brand new approach to help build these skills, using drum machines and loop pedals to build backing tracks. This means you can see how the bassline interacts with other elements of the music, and improvise over the top of it. It's a great way to learn to write your own material, or to create original basslines over existing songs. It also helps you learn how to solo over chords, and make up your own basslines on the spot. These backing tracks are all available to take home for practising, so you'll never have to play alone again.

I do my best to keep lessons varied, interesting and most importantly tailored to your own needs. Whether you just play for fun, to iron out your technique for a band, learn to write solid and inventive bass lines, or take exams up to Grade 8, I can help you get there. Lessons usually take place at my studio in Crookesmoor, and are competitively priced.
