Notes:

I am a professional bass player and teacher with over 30 years’ experience. Lessons are designed for all ability levels and styles. Beginners are welcome.

The bass guitar is principally an ensemble instrument, although it can take on soloist and chordal roles depending on the individual musician and the musical situation. Therefore, the primary aim of bass lessons is to develop the skills necessary to play bass effectively, fluently and musically in a band situation. An emphasis is placed on playing technique, dexterity, reading, stylistic knowledge, theory, playing creatively, and perhaps most importantly developing a good sense of rhythm, timing and groove. Whatever level you aspire to (amateur to professional) these, I believe, are the fundamentals of good bass musicianship. To develop these skills, musical examples are drawn from a wide range of styles, from jazz to popular and classical music. Topics covered include:

Components of the bass guitar
Tuning
Posture and playing technique
Notes of the fingerboard
How to practice
Intervals
Reading
Scales
Diatonic chords
Dexterity exercises
Styles (rock, jazz, funk, soul, Latin, reggae, slap)
