I started to play the drums rather late at the age of 10 (1976). At the age of 12 I attended the privately run Drum School ‘Musik Insel’ in my home town of Mannheim / Germany, studied drums for 6 years, but started to earn money already during my studies.
Between 1984 and 1988, I mainly worked with the Dance & Show Band ‘Twins’. ‘Twins’ played the ‘European and World Championships’ in Standard and Latin American Dances and other other large Galas. I worked with the ‘Twins’ Band for 5 years.
In 1988, I moved to Hamburg to join the Tour & Gala Band ‘Made in Germany’, with whom I toured and recorded with artists like Wencke Myhre, Gitte, Howard Carpendale, Nana Muskouri, Roger Whittaker, Graham Bonney, Chris Andrews, Rudi Carrell, Roberto Blanco, Rex Gildo and many more. In 1986 I recorded with Boney M and Julio Iglesias. During the same period, I played the Musicals ‘Cats’ in Hamburg and ‘Starlight Express’ in Bochum. I toured with ‘Made in Germany’ until 1993.
In 1993, I joined the German ‘Circus Roncalli’ and toured all European productions for 3 years non-stop. In 1994, I became ‘Assistant Musical Director’.
In November 1995, I settled in my hometown Mannheim, Germany and went into partnership with the instrument retailer; ‘Pro Music’. I installed and managed the drum department, I founded the ‘Avalon School of Drums’ and the ‘Avalon Management and Agency’, which relocated to England in 1996 and represented Dancers, Musicians and Artists.
During 1995 / 1996, I have promoted my first workshop tour in Germany, introducing my drum teaching method, which was later to become ‘talkingboutdrums’. In July 1996, I was offered a job as Musical Director on tour with the ‘Swedish National Circus Scott’. I accepted the offer, which led to the foundation of the ‘Markus Jaichner Orchestra’.
During 1996 and 2004, the ‘Markus Jaichner Orchestra’ toured non-stop. We worked for the Swedish National Circus, the Festival Prinsessan, Circus Benneweis, the Festival Enschede, the Offenburger Weihnachtscircus, the Festival Nimes, the Festival de Cirque D’Isere de Grenoble, the Festival Citta di Latina, Stars in der Manege, Circus Krone, Circo Massimo, Weltweihnachtscircus Stuttgart and Circo Americano as well as various productions for RTL, ARD, France 3, SVE TV and Rai Uno.
In 2001, the ‘Markus Jaichner Orchestra’ received the 'Orchestra of the Year 2001’ Award at the ‘5th Festival International du Cirque de Grenoble’. The jury consisted of 12 international music and film celebrities. In 2009, I was honoured to receive the 'Musical Director of the Year 2009’- Award at the'11th Festival Internazionale Del Circo Citta Di Latina', where the jury consisted of 24 jurors from the 24 biggest Circuses in the world.
Since 2004, The ‘Markus Jaichner Orchestra’ has reduced its demanding touring schedule due to professional and personal commitments of the Orchestra members, including myself. Presently, we continue to work with the Weltweihnachtscircus Stuttgart, the Festival Citta di Latina and Circo Americano for 5 months of the year.
In 2004, I started to divide my time equally between drum teaching and working as musician and Musical Director. I have written many books regarding my method, hosted workshops and clinics Europe-wide. My method ‘talkingboutdrums’ was officially born and has been the core of all my teaching activities since then.
In 2011 I located my new drum school, ‘talkingboutdrums’, to Rushden, Northamptonshire. I have recently released the first fourteen instructional videos, together with extracts of my books, which can be viewed on and downloaded for free from my website www.talkingboutdrums.co.uk.
In addition to the above, in 2011 I passed exams and obtained qualifications in ‘Level 3 PTLLS’ Life Long Teaching and in ‘Public Service Interpreting’ for English and German, and worked as Music Teacher and Interpreter on various occasions during 2011.
The doors of my drum school are now open. I am offering lessons, consultations, workshops and clinics in my own school as well as in Schools, Colleges, Conservatoires and Universities.
