LESSONS FOR CHILDREN
How will my child be taught?
I use the Suzuki Method to teach children to play the violin. I adapt this to suit the different personalities of the children that I teach.
To begin with your child will learn to play the violin without reading the music so that they are able to focus on correct posture and technique. Reading music will be introduced gradually as the child progresses; through games, activities and colour coding the music.
Your help will be needed at home to help your child practice, so you will need to attend the lessons so that you are able to help them.

How old should my child be to learn the violin?
I have taught children as young as 3 years old, so it can be anytime after this.

My child has special needs - would you be willing to teach them?
Yes - definitely. I have experience in teaching children with Downs Syndrome, Autism and ADHD as well as other needs. My house has been adapted for wheelchair access and I have space on my drive for parking.

Do you teach group lessons if children want to learn together?
Yes, I have experience in teaching group lessons.

Do I need to buy a violin before my childís first lesson?
I suggest coming to the lesson without a violin so that your child can try different sizes to make sure it is the right size. It is very difficult for a child to play a violin that is too big for them. I have violins that you can borrow free of charge for the 1st month and after this there will be a monthly fee of £5 per month to cover the costs of the strings and bow.
If you would like to buy a violin please buy one from a recommended music shop to make sure that it is set up correctly and is easy for your child to play.

Will my child have to do music exams?
No, your child wonít have to do exams if they donít want to.

Can my child take music exams?
Yes, I am happy to enter your child for music exams. They donít have to do all of the exams. For example, they may just do grades 5 and 8, or 1 and 3.

Where are the lessons held?
In my music studio at my house in Lillington.

How long are the lessons?
I suggest 30 minutes once a week in term time and/or the holidays.

What is the cost?
£15 for 30 minutes.
I suggest a maximum of 4 trial lessons in the beginning and after that I require a payment in advance for each term.

LESSONS FOR ADULTS

Beginners
I use the Suzuki Violin books to teach posture and technique. These begin without reading music so that you are able to concentrate on playing the violin correctly. If you are already able to read music, that is great Ė you will be able to use what you already know and apply it to the violin.
Some clients come with a desire to play folk music and others the electric violin, while others want to play music for church or in a chamber or orchestral setting.

Intermediate
I will assess your ability and we will use pieces from the Suzuki violin books together with other music to help you progress in the way that suits you.

Do I need to buy a violin before my first lesson?
If you are not sure about investing in a violin, I have violins that you can borrow free of charge for the 1st month and after this there will be a monthly fee.
It is very important that your violin is set up correctly so that you are able to play it easily. A violin that is incorrectly set up may be very difficult to play. I suggest buying your violin from a reputable violin shop/dealer that is known to set up the violins correctly. If you already have a violin, I suggest that you take it to a violin repairer/maker who will be able to make sure it is set up correctly and make adjustments as necessary.

Will I have to do music exams?
No, you can just play for pleasure.

Can I take music exams?
Yes, I am happy to prepare you for music exams if you would like to do them.

Where are the lessons held?
In my music studio at my house in Lillington.
You can park on my drive or in the street.

How long are the lessons?
Lessons can be 30 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour.
They donít have to every week. You could come for an hourís lesson on alternate weeks. Or just book a lesson when you are free.
I suggest that the first beginner lessons are an hour as there is a lot to cover, and then you can see what works best for you.

What is the cost?
£30 for 1 hour
£22.50 for 45 minutes
£15 for 30 minutes

I suggest a maximum of 4 trial lessons in the beginning and after that a payment in advance for several lessons.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
