Biography

I was born in 1989 and have been playing drums since 2003. I was inspired to take up the drum kit by listening to the organised and powerful drumming of Neil Peart especially on the 80's Rush albums. I spent much of my early development just playing along to these records and making music with other young musicians mostly in the rock and hard rock idioms.

As I reached the end of secondary school, I gained my first experience teaching drums peripatetically around the local area. The experience was highly formative and I made many mistakes, which drove me to improve the theory side of my playing. I learned to read music and began to explore jazz and funk. I also began to listen to more drummers, broadening my base of influences to include the likes of Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Smith, Vinnie Colauita, Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich, John Bonham and many more.

I had the choice between heading straight out and making a living as a drummer or gaining additional academic qualifications. I decided that the best option for my future would be to broaden my horizons and study Physics at the University of York. I spent 4 intense and enjoyable years in York during which I attained a First Class Masters in Physics, and won the final year masters thesis project prize.

After University, I spent time teaching Physics in secondary school. Although I ultimately discovered that classroom teaching is not for me, I gained invaluable experience on the theory and practice of learning and how successful teachers go about their craft; all these lessons continue to inform my private drum tuition (and indeed my private tuition of Maths, Physics and Chemistry).

Over the past few years I have enjoyed and achieved success teaching maths and physics peripatetically in the Stroud area, and teaching drums in Stroud, Cheltenham and Swindon. I have a contract teaching drums at Katherine Lady Berkeley School in Wooton-under-Edge.

I continue to study and practice drums. I consider myself an eternal student of the instrument and of the craft of teaching. I strive to learn something new every lesson or performance. I have also played and recorded in session environments, experiences I have found challenging, scary but phenomenally valuable for my playing. I continue to seek out new challenges in order to grow as a player and teacher.
