I teach from age 4 upwards, after a free trial lesson to see if the child is able to benefit from lessons. With all children's lessons I expect a parent to be present during lessons, and to help the child practise until they have reached an age/stage where they are able to practise efficiently on their own.
In terms of method, I take an eclectic approach, according to the strengths and interests of the pupil. This includes teaching by ear (Suzuki-influenced approach) where appropriate, for instance with young children, as well as learning to play from written music for more advanced learners. My own kids originally learned to play by ear, and now play fluently from written music. I encourage my students to take the occasional ABRSM exams, but do not insist upon this nor recommend taking every single exam. Playing in ensembles is also important and I try to create opportunities for my students to do this, and to participate in little, relaxed, concerts from an early age, ideally before nerves set in.
