Matthew Waldren trained at RCM, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University, and Guildhall School of Music. Now a rising star of the opera conducting world, Matthew was a professional opera singer for over ten years.
As a singer Matthew sang
Tall Englishman (The Gambler), and Un Cenobite (Thais) for Grange Park Opera, for whom he also sang as a chorister and understudy between 2004 and 2007;
Zuniga (Carmen) for Opera de Bauge (2006);
Carpenter's Mate, Dick Deadeye (HMS Pinafore) for Carl Rosa Opera (2004), for whom he also toured in the UK, Australia and New Zealand with Pirates of Penzance, Mikado, Iolanthe, Gondoliers, and Die Fledermaus between 2003 and 2007;
Chorus for Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company between 2002 and 2008 in Mikado, Iolanthe, Pirates of Penzance, Ruddigore, The Sorcerer, and Gondoliers.
Customs Officer understudy (La boheme) for Raymond Gubbay Ltd at the Royal Albert Hall (2007), for whom he also appeared in Carmen (2005, 2009), and Tosca (2008).
Professional music theatre credits include Wonderful Town, South Pacific.
In 2009 Matthew became a conductor and was appointed Chorus Master at London's Opera Holland Park (2009-11), after which he became a regular guest conductor at the Festival.
For OHP he has conducted
Rigoletto, Gianni Schicchi, Zanetto, Les Pecheurs de Perles, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Lakme, Fantastic Mr Fox, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. He returns in 2016 to conduct La boheme.
For Royal Opera House he has conducted Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 2015
The Signum Classics recording of Alice in Wonderland entered the specialist Classical Chart at No 1 in June 2015.
For English National Opera he was assistant and cover conductor to Xian Zhang for La boheme in 2015.
For G&S Opera Company he has conducted Yeomen of the Guard.
For Opera Lyrica he has conducted La Traviata.
Matthew's conducting has been heard on BBC Radio 3, and seen on BBC Newsnight.
Matthew has worked with the Orchestra of English National Opera, City of London Sinfonia, London Mozart Players and National Festival Orchestra.
He regularly coaches professional singers.
