Miss Helen Nicholas

Helen is currently in the final year of her BMus (Hons) Performance Degree at Trinity Laban. She has been tutored by Mikhail Kasakevich and the late Yonty Solomon and is currently studying with Hilary Coates. Last year she was awarded the 'Nancy Thomas Prize for Highest Achieving Undergraduate Piano Student'.

Helen has participated in many festivals and competitions. In 2010 she won the John Longmire Solo Piano Competition at Trinity, in which she performed Beethoven's Sonata No. 26 in E flat major, Op. 81a ('Les Adieux'). She then went through to represent Trinity in the BPSE Senior Intercollegiate Piano Competition, which took place at the Blüthner Piano Centre, London. She has been successful in the annual Jacques Samuel Intercollegiate Piano Competition, receiving one of the 'Managing Director's Awards' in 2009 and a 'Highly Commended' from the adjudicators in 2010. Helen was also a quarter-finalist in the Sussex International Piano Competition, which took place at the Royal Academy of Music in 2010.

Helen has given numerous recitals around London and Dorset, as well as two performances of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto with the Dorset County Orchestra. Last year she was invited to give a 'Yamaha Pianos & Chappell of Bond Street Promotional Recital', as well as perform Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue with the Wessex Youth Orchestra (WYO), of which she was formally a member for four years. Within the WYO she played first violin, although now she guests on viola.

Helen is also a very experienced accompanist and chamber musician. In 2009, she was the pianist for a production of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years in Harrow, London. In addition she was given the opportunity to accompany dance classes at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and played piano for W11 Opera, based in West London. Helen has also been part of the Bradtke Piano Trio, performing in master-classes and concerts.

In addition to being an enthusiastic solo performer, Helen enjoys working with others in ensembles. Though her ambition is to perform as a concert pianist, she hopes to continue her chamber music, which gives an added dimension to her musical life.
