Born in 1977, Alex started playing with marching and brass bands and orchestras at the age of 14, moving on to Rock, Pop and Jazz session work at the age of 16, in studios around the U.K.
At 18, Alex joined his first internationally touring band, Death-Metallers Bolt Thrower touring and recording the award winning album 'Mercenary' in 1998. Subsequently he went on to perform with UK Blues guitarist Aynsley Lister, recording the albums 'All or Nothing' and 'Upside Down' for the Ruf records label.

Since then Alex has worked with the prog band Asia, punks Groop Dogdrill, hard rockers Hiding Place, ex 5ive Jazz-pop singer Sean Conlon, and for the last four years to the present day with Mercury Music Prize winner, Badly Drawn Boy, with whom he has recorded the highly acclaimed albums 'One Plus One is One' and 'Born in the U.K.'

Alex is also a keen drum tutor with many years experience with private lessons, college lecturing and drum clinics including an appearance at DrumFest amongst others, and has been interviewed by Drummer magazine, and Bizarre magazine about his own solo, self produced albums recorded under the name Earl Shilton, on which all guitars, vocals and keyboards are played by Alex.
