Notes:
I love teaching and have taught cello at all levels for more than 40 years. I also play piano well, so I can accompany cello pupils. I was an ABRSM examiner for 24 years so know exaxctly what is required for exams and I currently teach at Oundle School.
I grew up in London and was lucky enough to have had some superb string instrument teachers myself. Although they have influenced me, I have developed my own approach to teaching which includes encouraging pupils to improvise and play by ear as well as giving them a secure background in classical technique. I respond to every pupil individually, based on what they want to achieve on the cello.
My background as a professional performer includes touring North America as principal cellist with the Scottish Baroque Ensemble and making my solo debut at the Wigmore Hall and gaining excellent national reviews. In 1983 I founded and became artistic director of Peterborough String Orchestra which was reviewed in The Guardian as having “the sort of responsive precision you expect from a string quartet. The real emotional stuff of music making”. I recently recorded Bach’s first, third and fifth unaccompanied cello suites. I also arrange and compose music for cello and piano and for string duet. This music is available at www.fedorastrings.com, and SJ Music has published my cello duet arrangements of Four Famous Opera Arias.
