Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

I have been teaching privately and in various primary and high schools since 1996. I hold a Bachelors degree in Music Education and a Masters degree in Musicology, both of which I graduated with distinction. I trained as a classical pianist with one of South Africa's most renowned concert pianists and tutors, Pauline Nossel, and took clarinet as my second instrument with Alan Thompson. This said, I have also taught and performed in a variety of musical styles, including jazz, pop and rock, and have also learned to play and teach other instruments as I've needed them in various school, church and gigging environments. Hence, in addition to piano and clarinet, I have taught recorder and electronic keyboard since 2001, saxophone since 2005, guitar since 2009, and ukulele since 2017.

As an accompanist I've worked with vocal and instrumental students ranging from beginner to Grade 8 and university levels. I have also performed in various settings with Somerset West-based soloist Devon Worrall. There I have covered keyboards, backing vocals, and occasionally bass guitar for various popular music gigs.

I absolutely love teaching, accompanying and performing and believe that anyone can learn to play an instrument if they have the genuine will to do so. Regardless of their natural level of talent, each person benefits from the many ways that music helps to develop the brain both intellectually and emotionally. My students have ranged in age from 3 to 75.

In my experience, every student has a musical identity that is made up of their own taste, talent and level of enthusiasm to put in the work necessary to develop their musical skill. Hence, while one needs to lay a certain groundwork for all students, I try to tailor lessons to the abilities and tastes of each individual as we explore together the formation of their own musical identity. For some this means following the route of formal music exams in classical, jazz or rock styles, for others it is just a matter of learning to play for fun. If there's something I don't know, I'm happy to research it and learn along with the student. As a teacher, I really am constantly learning from my students.

Over the years, many of my students have excelled in practical and theory examinations, eisteddfods, and concerts, sometimes achieving the highest results in our area, or winning their sections. One of my recorder students was selected to perform as a soloist with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra in their annual Young Artists Concerto Festival, and some of my piano and guitar students have gone on to form bands of their own.

While I can teach students up to advanced levels, I am most passionate about teaching beginner to intermediate stages. This is a period of great discovery and it is an exciting journey to be a part of as we explore together the many wonders of music and all the opportunities for growth that it offers.
