Philip Jones is a countertenor and former chorister of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Choir. After completing his training with Julian Pike and Michael Chance at Birmingham Conservatoire, Philip won scholarships from the “Vivian Prins Memorial Award” and “Edward & Helen Hague Award” to study at the Royal College of Music, where he completed a MMus with Distinction under the tuition of Russell Smythe. During his time at RCM, Philip was further supported by the Josephine Baker Trust and became a Britten-Pears Young Artist, receiving coaching from Ian Partridge, Ann Murray and Mark Padmore as well as singing in Masterclassess with David Daniels and James Bowman.
Solo work has taken Philip across Europe, the National Music Festival in Israel, and closer to home includes Symphony Hall, Cadogan Hall and St John’s Smith Square. His repertoire includes: Bach Bminor Mass with Italian group, Muisca Saeculorum, Handel’s Semele with English Voices and Cecilia Bartoli, Pergolesi’s solo cantata, Salve Regina with Florilegium, Dido & Aeneas with Collegio Ghislieri’s Arìon Consort, Messiah with David Hill, Christmas Oratorio with the Choir of the Royal Holloway & RCM Baroque orchestra and Come ye sons of Art for Laurence Cummings and the London Handel Festival.
Opera roles include: Orimeno (Erismena) with New Chamber Opera, Apollo (Il Pastor Fido) conducted by Laurence Cummings for the London Handel Festival, Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) for the Benjamin Britten Opera School at the Royal College of Music, title role of Flavio (cover) with English Touring Opera, Narciso (Agrippina) for the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Raphael (Tobias and the Angel) for the Buxton Opera Festival, Ottone (L’Incoronazione di Poppea), Endimione (La Calisto) and Apollo (Psyche).
As well as singing, Philip has been trained to diploma standards on piano, violin and baroque violin. He is available to tutor on these instruments also.
