Biography

Alex Tay is a composer-violinist that has performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Kings College Chapel. He has studied with Robin Holloway, Richard Causton, Christian Mason and Jeremy Thurlow and worked with performers such as Hugh Brunt, Gerry Cornelius, Patrick Bailey, the Britten Sinfonia and the Heath Quartet. Alex also held the position of Cambridge University Music Society Joint-Composer-in-Residence. In 2015 Alex was announced as winner of Britten Sinfonia's Cambridge Composition Workshop and was subsequently asked to write three pieces for them. More recently, Alex had a large orchestral work premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra as part of their annual Panufnik Workshops for young composers. He is also set to take part in a workshop with the Royal Northern Sinfonia as part of their Beethoven 2020 celebrations. Alex is currently in his second year of a composition PhD under Professor Julian Anderson. As a violinist he has studied with Matthew Jones, the head of chamber music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and is a graduate of the Junior Royal Academy of Music.
