Biography

My musical education began at age 7 when I heard the violin on the radio. I turned to my mother and said: "I want to play that"!

I started with group lessons at Saturday morning music school in Dunedin, New Zealand before beginning individual private lessons.

My most influential violin teacher was Sydney Manowitz (a brief biography of him here: http://southernsinfonia.org/bio_manowitz.html) who studied at the Julliard School of Music. He taught me how to listen intently to the sound I was making and encouraged me to be forever curious about violin playing, performance and music in general.

At the University of Otago I studied music, mathematics and physics gaining a first-class honours degree in music, majoring in conducting in 1992.

Following my graduation I worked throughout New Zealand as a freelance conductor, violinist and viola player. I have played in and conducted many of the major orchestras in New Zealand: Southern Sinfonia, Christchurch Symphony, Orchestra Wellington, members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia. I am currently Music Director of the St Matthews Chamber Orchestra.

I have maintained a private teaching studio for over 20 years and continue to love teaching and inspiring students of violin, viola, piano, theory and conducting.
