Piano, clarinet and theory lessons in the New Malden/Kingston/
Wimbledon area, from a professional and experienced teacher.

PLEASE CHOOSE THE TESTIMONIALS TAB ABOVE for more information about what my students say about my lessons.

I give friendly, enthusiastic and rigorous teaching of piano and clarinet to all levels - beginner to advanced (post Grade 8), children and adults.

My students achieve great results (e.g. in Grade exams and in regular concerts) but my goal is to go much further than that, and ensure that music puts down strong roots in their lives so that they love and actively play their instrument as adults. That means going beyond the rather narrow approach that is all too common: of more-or-less rote learning and rushing through scales and exams so as to briefly be able to play (and quickly forget!) one or two difficult-sounding pieces, but without much wider understanding or a sustainable base of skills.

So as well as focusing hard on results in the short term (e.g. in Grade exams) I pay a lot of attention to the
wider musical skills that will ensure enjoyment and success in the longer term. So for example, I work to ensure all my pupils become great music readers in all styles of music (so they can can pick anything up and play it and can join groups and orchestras); that they take ownership by choosing some of the music they are going to learn (e.g. from films, songs etc); that they become confident playing informally with others; that they are able to work out a tune by ear; and that they understand how the ingredients of music (e.g. scales and chords) actually work and can even improvise and write music themselves.

This more balanced approach means children are much more likely to keep working at their instruments, and are more likely to end up skilled and well-rounded musicians in adulthood. But best of all, it's a lot of fun too!

Students come from New Malden, Raynes Park, Wimbledon, Kingston, Surbiton, Putney, Earlsfield, Richmond, Teddington, Worcester Park, Ewell.
