Biography

Claude Pietersen is a saxophonist and composer from Oxford. He began playing the saxophone at age 8. After developing a love of Jazz in his early teens, he joined the Oxfordshire Senior Schools Big Band and later participated in projects organised by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s outreach section, ‘Guildhall connect’. This included being involved in the East London Creative Jazz Orchestra run by Paul Griffiths and other members of the music education group, Blue Pepper. While on projects with this group he participated in workshops and coaching sessions with Robert Glasper and musicians from the Jazz at the Lincoln Center orchestra.
He also participated in workshops organised by the Tomorrows Warriors group led by Gary Crosby. Mentors included, Simon Purcell, Finn Peters and Abram Wilson.

Claude then joined the renowned Jazz Degree course at Birmingham Conservatoire where he is currently studying in his 4th year. During his time on the course he has received tuition from musicians such as Mike Williams, Jean Toussaint, Hans Koller, Andy Panayi and Percy Pursglove. He has participated in projects with visiting artists, John O’Gallagher (Webern Project), Arnie Somogyi (Mingus Big Band) and Francois Theberge (Monkathon)

Claude is currently working on a project that features the music of the second Viennesse school of composition arranged for a jazz platform
