Biography

London based violist Sam Watkin first began his musical studies at aged 6 on the violin, under the tutelage of Andrew Shaw. At age 17 he switched to viola, and began studying with Adrian Turner. After being awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Sam went to study with Andrew Berridge, and then Stephen Tees. Sam has had master classes with world-renowned viola players such as Antoine Tamestit and Garth Knox.

Sam has also benefitted from apprenticeship schemes, after being awarded the Scottish Opera apprenticeship where he performed with them at Glasgow’s city chambers, and also winning a place on the BBCSSO’s apprenticeship scheme, where he took part with the orchestra in a tour of India under the conductor James MacMillan and soloist Nicola Benedetti. Whilst over in India on tour with the BBCSSO this Easter, Sam was given the opportunity to perform to school children around India, accompanying Nicola Benedetti with a string quartet.

Since graduating from the Royal Conservatiore of Scotland, Sam has worked freelancing with orchestra's such as BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Swan including tours to Mexico and Turkey.

Sam is currently playing for Southbank Sinfonia in London.
