Rebecca Ellis (Piano Pupil) Date: October 2018
Neil is a passionate and inspiring teacher who changed how I played, listened to and thought about music. He is creative, well prepared and very patient and approaches piano teaching and music in a holistic way. He tailored my lessons to what I wanted to achieve with a focus on developing good overall musicianship as well as piano technique. I particularly enjoyed and benefited from having opportunities to perform on the piano in small concerts and to be recorded and be able to listen back to my playing.
Harry Reid (Piano Pupil) Date: November 2018
Neil is a great piano teacher. He makes learning piano fun which I really like. I feel relaxed with Neil, so it's not like being with a teacher, although he gives me homework, but doesn't put pressure on me, which has helped me, for example to read sheet music. I really like composing and Neil is very creative and makes me think about what I can do that is different. Neil is really easy to talk to and I feel I can ask him anything. If I had to sum Neil up in one word - it would be cool.Ē
Sandeep Kesavan (Piano Pupil) Date: November 2018
Neil is a truly accomplished, enthusiastic and passionate music teacher. He individualises lessons to your needs, be it examinations or just that piece youíve always wanted to play. Neil has not only significantly improved my piano playing but also opened my eyes to all types of music. The lessons are varied and have the right balance of relaxed informality with real attention to detail. I would have no hesitation in recommending Neil as a piano teacher.
Ellie Wilcock (Singing Pupil) Date: November 2018
My technique has improved massively with Neil's teaching, and my friends and family have commented on how much my voice has blossomed during my lessons with him. I would definitely say he played a huge role in me receiving a place at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for Musical Theatre. He increased my confidence with my audition pieces and made my voice stronger overall as well as looking into sight singing and acting through song. Not only this, but the lessons were always fun and energetic and a part of my week that I looked forward to.
Lynne Dawson (Head of Voice at RNCM) Date: November 2018
I have known Neil since 2010, first as an Undergraduate at Leeds College of Music where he studied piano and I was Professor of Performance and, since September 2014 as a Postgraduate on the Masters Programme at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where I am now Head of School of Vocal Studies. I would like to recommend Neil to you as exceptionally suitable; he is multi-talented as both keyboard player and singer, has quite a lot of experience of working with young people and groups and is a reliable and trustworthy young man. He is an excellent colleague, sensible, takes direction well and is a good member of a team whilst able to work on his own initiative. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to you.

I am very happy to write in support of Mr Balfour. He is an highly able and extremely versatile young musician of immense promise. He has a highly professional attitude to all that he undertakes and will make an entirely admirable member of the profession. As an individual he sets himself the highest of standards and I am in the very happy position of being able to commend him in the strongest possible terms without mental reservation or equivocation of any kind whatsoever. Neil was my first guitar teacher and I believe I was his first student. From the very start, when I knew nothing about playing the instrument, he made me feel comfortable and gradually built my playing from the ground up. Neilís teaching methods were very effective and I soon reached a very secure standard. From that point his easy going, yet interesting, lessons helped me greatly to quickly improve my skills. I had another teacher after Neil but I soon quit as I wasn't learning as much as I was when with Neil. I didn't have any more teachers after this and continued to teach myself in Neilís way. To this day Neil remains the best guitar teacher I have come across.
