David Palmer (b.1997) recently graduated from Oxford University (Worcester College) with a First-Class BA in music, and now works as a freelance composer, pianist and tutor in Oxford. A former Oxford University Music Society president (2017-18) and OUMS Chamber Music manager (2018-19), David held an academic scholarship, an Instrumental Award, and a scholarship to perform with Ensemble ISIS – the University’s contemporary music ensemble.

Before beginning his composition studies with Robert Saxton in Oxford, David studied composition with Matthew Sergeant and piano with Jonathan Middleton at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music (2012-16). Awards at the JRNCM included the Friends of the JRNCM Ensemble Prize (2016), Director’s Prize (2015), Peter Redfearn Memorial Prize for Composition (2014), and Margaret Thomas Junior Piano Composition Award (2014; Penrith Piano Circle).

As a composer for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (2014-16), David was tutored by Anna Meredith and Larry Goves. His compositions were performed in the Snape Maltings Concert Hall (Britten Studio), Birmingham Symphony Hall, Tate Britain gallery, Southbank Centre (Clore Ballroom), and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall (Music Room). Prior to his time with the NYO, David was tutored by David Horne on the 2014 Sound and Music Summer School.

Alongside regular solo recitals, David regularly performs with his piano trio, and duo partner Charlie Lovell-Jones (violin). Orchestral keyboard opportunities include appearances with the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra (Szczecin Philharmonic Hall, Poland, 2014-16), Junior RNCM Symphony Orchestra, and most student orchestras in Oxford.

David currently studies composition with Richard Barrett in The Hague, and piano with Ronan O’Hora in London. He enjoys a busy teaching schedule in Oxford, and currently works with Oxford Youth Choirs (Senior Girls’ Choir accompanist, and Junior Boys’ and Boys’ Choirs accompanist and co-director), Banbury Choral Society (accompanist and assistant musical director), and Christ Church Cathedral School (piano/theory tutor).
