British-Chinese pianist, Michael Lan, began taking lessons at Hindhead Music Centre aged six with Nikiforos Klironomos and then with Ourania Gassiou. He then studied with Janet Newman at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, where he was also the King’s Music Scholar. He is currently in his first year of postgraduate study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of Philip Jenkins.
Michael has been prizewinner in a number of competitions, ranging from local contests to the international stage. Most recently, he has won the Tilford Bach Society Award, the Kawai Prize at the Young Pianist of the North International Competition, 1st Prize at the International Grand Prize Virtuoso Competition (Vienna), and the Nora Seary Prize and Steinway Hall Recital Prize at the Kent International Piano Courses. Michael has participated in masterclasses with Richard Goode, Peter Frankl, Sa Chen, Artur Pizarro, Noriko Ogawa, Christopher Elton, Melvyn Tan, Anne Queffélec, and Martin Roscoe amongst others.
Michael is the pianist of the London Panufnik Trio, recently appearing with them at the inaugural Birmingham International Piano Chamber Music Festival in 2018, and in a concert tour of Poland in 2017. They have participated in masterclasses with Ralf Gothóni, Levon Chilingirian, Michael Dussek, Tom Poster, The Danish Quartet, Daniel Tong, and the Gould Piano Trio. In 2018 and 2019, the trio attended the Tunnell Trust's Music Coll in Scotland.
Michael's concert appearances as soloist and concerto performer have taken him across the UK and Europe at venues such as the V. Sarajishvili State Conservatoire Grand Hall in Tbilisi, the Gläserner-Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, and Milton Court Concert Hall, Steinway Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, St. James's Piccadilly, and St. John's Church, Waterloo in London. With the London Panufnik Trio, Michael has also performed at the Silesian Philharmonic Concert Hall in Katowice and St. John's Smith Square, London. His concerto performances have included Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto with Southern Pro Musica, Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto with the Guildford Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals with the RGS Symphony Orchestra. Michael has also appeared on BBC Radio 3 performing works for piano duo.
