Classical instrument tuition has the potential to be stuffy and boring. In reality, there is no need for this to be the case. Learning to play any kind of instrument should be about a love for music-making first whether the student's individual ambition is for mastery of the craft and a high-flying solo career or whether they're aiming to develop a rewarding pastime and a creative way to socialise.

As a professional player my day-to-day style is rock and contemporary as I am the violinist in a band called Virgin Soldiers. We define our music as Strock; it is melodic and dramatic with energetic, rock-inspired rhythms. The band consists of acoustic and bass guitars, piano, voices and three string instruments (a violin, a viola and a cello) integrated into the band.

Along with the other two string players in the band, I originally trained classically to a high level and switched my focus to playing pop/contemporary music while studying at university. This means that I'm confident in teaching either style - or both - to students of any age or stage.

As well as more traditional teaching of the classical repertoire or following the graded exam system I am more than happy to teach contemporary or pop music - just imagine learning to play all of your favourite songs or even iconic guitar solos! I can, if necessary, produce play-a-long backing tracks based on chosen songs for use in lessons and practice as an additional service as well as being able to arrange accompaniment for students using the piano.

Following extensive renovation, lessons are now held at my quiet, comfortable teaching space which is near the centre of Tunbridge Wells and is equipped with a piano and sound system for accompaniment. Students will need their own violin although those capable of using a full size instrument (minimum height 5ft/1.5m) may use my spare instrument during trial lessons by arrangement.

I am now also offering lessons on the viola up to intermediate level. This is suitable for students with larger hands who have attained the basics of violin playing and wish to progress onto a larger and/or more unusual instrument.
