Completed Educare child protection training course. (more)
Keeping Children Safe in Music is the latest in the EduCare's series of distance learning courses on child protection. The training programme uses short films to show a variety of good and bad practice examples, which will be available to watch online. It will help anyone teaching music to children gain a better understanding of their child protection responsibilities, and avoid situations that could lead to accusations of misconduct.

I teach violin and viola to Grade 8 and piano up to Grade 4. I have been a professional musician and teacher for 30 years. I learned violin with Sheila Nelson, one of the foremost teachers in Europe, and I teach using her method. I teach and perform both classical and folk music.

I perform with the Carnival Band (, the Ten Tors Orchestra ( and for ceilidhs / barn dances with the Blue Jewel Ceilidh Band ( The Blue Jewel website has more information about my teaching. My main aim in teaching is to make playing an instrument and making music an enjoyable and enriching experience. I give students a practise diary which gives a structure for practise at home, enables parents to be involved with practise if they wish, and keeps parents informed of progress. Students have opportunities to play together with their class friends, so they can experience the fun of making music together. I enter students for ABRSM Exams (100% success rate to date) simply as an aid to learning, and not if parents or student prefer not.

In 2011 I created a local community folk band, to write and arrange songs and tunes to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the South Hams Area of Outstanding Beauty, with a performance at the Flavel in Dartmouth. You can read more about it, see photos, and listen to some of the music here:

I started a children's ceilidh band with fellow violin teacher, Lindsay Braga, which performs one ceilidh each year, with weekly rehearsals leading up to it. More details at
