What does music mean to me?

Music to me is like oxygen – a necessary life ingredient! I am eclectic in my musical tastes, from the serenity of Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart and contemporary writers to the mad, crazy music my sons subject me to, especially in the car!

Why music?

I am the youngest of three girls and at the age of five, unless I also started playing the violin like my two older sisters, there was no-one to babysit me during their lessons and so I began to play. Their inspiration had come from our grandad who had been a professional violinist. I had also started tinkling away at the piano because there was one in our house and I was quite virtuosic on the triangle, tambourine and drum!

Music education

I enjoyed progressing through the ABRSM grades and performing in local festivals until my family moved to London and I was awarded a scholarship to the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music. I attended every Saturday for violin, piano, chamber music, theory, orchestral and choral tuition which was great fun. I had quite a mad Hungarian violin teacher and when I went to Oxford University, I continued my lessons with her.

At Oxford University I was instrumental scholar and played as soloist and chamber and orchestral player in many of the university’s fabulously varied venues. I also sang in the chapel choir which earnt me a free supper every Wednesday and Sunday evenings!

After Oxford, I continued with performances variously in London, Brussels and North Yorkshire and I took teaching and performance diplomas.

Teaching philosophy

Being very enthusiastic about music and appreciating how it has inspired me, my general approach and philosophy to teaching is to follow the pupil’s motivation and what they naturally enjoy playing whilst at the same time broadening their horizons. It is important to get a picture of the pupil’s experience and expectations and then together consider repertoire including technique, musical interpretation and expression.
Practice should be a labour of love. Rhythm is a fundamental element of all music and clapping and using percussion instruments provide a fun way to learn! With younger pupils in particular, it is important to read their mood and to adapt the lesson accordingly. I have extensive experience of dyslexic and autistic pupils.
