Biography

Walter is able to offer students a personal and tailor-made programme of tuition which has at its core his intensive early training as a classical pianist. After gaining an honours degree in Music from the University of Surrey, Walter began a career as a pianist and composer which has taken him into a diverse range of musical worlds. Orchestras and ensembles he’s worked with include the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Lontano, London Sinfonietta, Icebreaker and the Michael Nyman Band. Since 1988 he’s been accompanying silent films around Europe with Harmonie Band, with whom he recently toured in Poland and the Czech Republic in combination with the Hilliard Ensemble. Walter has regular engagements as Keyboardist/Musical Director at London’s National Theatre, and records sessions for Film and TV, most recently at Abbey Road. As a composer he has created many scores and soundtracks for a wide range of media and performing arts including contemporary dance, theatre, video and concerts. Between 1993 and 1996, at STEIM in the Netherlands, he invented and developed a revolutionary electronic musical instrument, the Chromasone, with which he has performed frequently and which was featured on BBC’s Tomorrow’s World. This project arose from his desire to use cutting-edge computer music technology to create a new, intuitive interface for live electronic music. As a lecturer, he's held posts at Middlesex University and Guest Professorships at the Institute of Sonology in the Royal Conservatory of the Netherlands. He currently teaches privately at the Creative Crypt at St.John’s on London’s South Bank. Since December 2006 he has also been Ensemble Director of KIME, the Kingston University Multimedia Ensemble. He recently launched his new piano trio, the Eidolon Trio, who are playing concerts in the London area.
