I am a cellist, viol player and academic researcher in music, with several years teaching experience in a variety of contexts including: instrumental playing from beginner to advanced, chamber music coaching, outreach sessions and workshops, and university level academic music.

In my instrumental teaching I aim to give students a relaxed, efficient physical foundation from which to explore their creative instincts. I also try to encourage a curiosity-led attitude to music-making, help students of any level to make their own practice more efficient and enjoyable, and equip them with the means to understand and overcome instrumental challenges. It's very important to me that learning music is a positive and rewarding experience! I happily prepare and enter students for ABRSM exams (and can accompany exams, at least up to a certain level), but this structure is not essential to my teaching.

As a performer on the cello and the viol I specialise in chamber music, as a member of two string quartets (Florian Quartet and Echo Chamber) and the early music ensembles Three Parts Vied and K'antu Ensemble. As a freelance musician I work regularly in chamber orchestras including the London Musical Arts Orchestra, NEW Sinfonia and Outcry Ensemble.

My PhD research is at King's College London, and concerns conventions of performance in early twentieth century recordings of string quartets; I've recently presented some of this work at conferences in York and Manchester. I have also taught undergraduate modules at King's in topics including music analysis, the history and philosophy of recording, and eighteenth century keyboard music.
