I am an experienced, empathic, patient and encouraging teacher who works with all age ranges (from 4 years upwards in 1:1 teaching), including retired and elderly students. I am a qualified teacher through my PGCE in Early Years & Primary and have been working as a musician and music teacher for the last decade.
My ethos focuses on wellbeing through music-making, which is the subject of my PhD. My teaching is tailored to individual students' interests and self-directed goals, using a coaching and facilitation approach to empower, encourage and extend my students' skills. I consider each student as a holistic individual and draw on my own experience of wellbeing strategies, such as Alexander Technique and mindfulness, to inform the range of strategies I offer my students. I aim to nurture each student to thrive through music-making, and to use it as an opportunity for personal development. I sincerely believe everyone is musical, and use creative methods to remove barriers to music-making so that it is accessible and enjoyable for all.
Students who choose to take exams are supported and challenged appropriately, and my students have had a 100% pass rate with a significant number achieving distinctions and merits. ABRSM is the exam board I have used to date, but others are also available.
As well as my experience as a 1:1 instrumental and vocal teacher (including in a special school for students with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities), I also have many years' experience as a community music facilitator, choir/voice workshop leader and performing & recording singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. I studied songwriting at postgraduate level for a year at Bath Spa University before leaving the Masters programme to begin my PhD there. I have undertaken a significant amount of Continuing Professional Development, including the BAST training for singing teachers and Lifemusic Facilitator Training.
I draw on my 10-year career of songwriting, performing and recording throughout my teaching, and have extensive experience performing to sizeable audiences at high-profile festivals, including Glastonbury Festival 2014 & 2013. I have released three albums to date, under my previous stage name of Anthea Neads.
Having recently re-located to Cornwall, I am teaching from my private studio in Lelant, just outside St. Ives, with stunning views over the Hayle estuary and a short walk to the beautiful Porthkidney Beach. I have always found nature inspires my creativity, and I hope the location will do the same for my students.
I'm a member of the Musicans' Union, Soundsense and the Natural Voice Network, and have undertaken safeguarding training. I have a recent clear Enhanced DBS Disclosure.
