Teaching style:
Friendly, encouraging, structured, organised around students needs. The focus for beginners is on developing a good technique: correct hand positioning, note and tone production, fingering and muting. In addition to learning to read music, aural training is also a priority. This involves learning to recognise note intervals and common chord patterns. An understanding of harmony (common chord patterns in blues, rock, jazz etc) is developed by playing along to records, working out bass lines by ear (as well as my favourites I encourage students to bring their own favourite tracks along as it is easier and more fun to play tunes you already know and like.)
More advanced students are introduced to a wide range of styles on the bass guitar and can study grades 5-8. They are given technical studies and pieces based around well-known bassists' styles, and develop their improvisation technique, aural skills, and consolidate their understanding of music harmony.
