Gwen has taught my son for the last 3 years since he was 11 years old. She oversaw his transition from playing violin to viola. She has encouraged him, coaxed him and put up with the attitude which comes with an emerging adolescent so sensitively. She understands that good technique is at the heart of all great playing and places emphasis on intonation, bowing technique and sound production. She plays beautifully herself so is able to demonstrate what is required and inspire through doing so. Once the technique is developing, she encourages musicality in all sorts of creative ways. Imagining a fairy story through playing is not going to ignite the interest of a bolshy 14 year old but the use of emoji stickers to convey different moods and sounds when playing Bach will! The result has been some breathtaking playing and a child who loves the viola.
