Born in Leicester, he was educated in England, Italy and The Netherlands. His students have in all categories, won competitions world-wide. He numbers over 27 British Cathedral musicians as former students.As a teenage pianist he played under the baton of Sir Michael Tippett, Norman Del Marr amongst others.As a teacher he has been Visiting Tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and for over 23 years has been teaching organists at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.For the past 5 years he was Professor of Improvisation at the Royal Academy of Music in London. For a number of years he was a professor at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Dresden as well as at the St Petersburg Conservatory. Other eminent musical institutions for whom he has taught include those in Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus, Bratislava, and Aberdeen University.He also has founded the International Summer Organ Conservatoire in 1986 which is now held each year in France. He has been a jury member of a number of international competitions, most notable being the Montbrison (France), European Improvisation (Belgium) and the Albert Schweitzer (Netherlands). In 1998 he was the first British jury member of the bi-annual Haarlem International Organ Concours in The Netherlands. He is in demand to give concerts throughout Europe and North America. He has given over 120 concerts alone in Denmark! His solo debut at The Royal Festival in London was in 1987. The huge work LíAmour du Christ was performed first at the Odense Festival in 1996 and recorded the following year in Odense Cathedral. At the Philharmonic Hall in St Petersburg in the 1998 Season, he gave the first complete performance of his 24 Concert Etudes. He has made a large number of CD recordings which have received the highest recommendations in the musical press. Last year John Scott gave the premier of a major composition commission for the 75th anniversary of the Organ Club in St Paulís Cathedral. He has been presented to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at St Jamesí Palace in recognition of his musical activities in the United Kingdom.
