About me:
I am a music educator and musician based in South East London. Originally from Northern Sweden, I studied the clarinet and music education at the Malmö Academy of Music, before relocating to London in 2009. Since moving to the UK, I have been playing and teaching traditional English and Scandinavian music working with several well-established London music institutions, including the English Folk Dance and Song Society and The Centre for Young Musicians.
In 2005 I was awarded the prestigious title "Riksspelman" (roughly, national tradition bearer, or musician) for my performance of Swedish traditional music on the clarinet. As well as performing on the clarinet and other woodwinds, I play melodeon for the Blackheath Morris Men and enjoy going to pub sessions. Although traditional music is my main area of expertise, I have played a number other genres in the past, including wind bands and Western classical music. At present, in addition to teaching, I am working on a PhD thesis in ethnomusicology focusing on Vietnamese music theatre.
No matter If you are interested in learning traditional music, get going on a new instrument, pass your music grades or just bring your clarinet out of storage, I can help you!

Teaching experience:
I have broad teaching background, and taught at primary and secondary schools as well as university level. As an instrument and ensemble teacher I have worked extensively with children and teenagers, as well as adult beginners, and taught private students in both Sweden and the UK. In addition, I have worked with a number of established music institutions in London, this is a selection:
Since 2011 I have been a returning tutor for the English Folk Dance and Song Society, including their big youth folk project ‘Get Your Folk On!’, as well as other ensemble, melodeon classes, and school projects; In 2011-12 I worked as a clarinet tutor for Newham council teaching beginner clarinet in their Every Child is a Musician project; I teach two of the Centre for Young Musicians Saturday folk music ensembles in Lambeth; and, I teach folk ensembles for adults, with the Trad Academy in Hackney.
I hold two Master degrees, in music education and ethnomusicology, and am up to date with modern teaching methods, as well as global approaches to musical understanding and learning.

Teaching methods and philosophy:
I am happy to teach both one-to-one and in small groups and will tailor the sessions to suit your goals. In both individual and group sessions I use combinations of aural learning and music notation, all depending on individual learning style and genre. Aural learning, in particular, is great both, if you have not previously learnt to read music and want to get going with your instrument, and for experienced musicians who wants to develop their ability to improvise and pick up pieces by ear. Having experience from music making and education in Sweden, and the UK – as well as having done research on music education in Vietnam – I have an open mind to methodologies and always work to find the best method for every student.

Please note: I am based in South East London and if you are unable to come to me for your lessons I am happy to travel (within London), however, I will charge another £5 per session for travel time and costs. I can also teach over Skype if this is more convenient for you.
