Mr Lewis Rowlands BMus (hons) LRAM

Biography

Lewis has been playing the trombone since the age of 10.

While he was still at school (Watford Grammar School for Boys), he was privileged to play with ensembles at both national and county level, including the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the National Youth Wind Ensemble, and Hertfordshire Brass Band and Orchestra. On leaving school he applied to three of the main music colleges in England and at his auditions was offered full scholarships by the Royal College and the Royal Academy as well as the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. He opted to accept the offer from the Academy.

During his time there, Lewis received tuition from some of the county’s foremost classical trombonists/teachers including Dudley Bright (Principal, London Symphony Orchestra) Denis Wick (former Principal, London Symphony Orchestra) and Ian Bousfield (Principal Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra). By the end of his second year, Lewis, among other achievements, had performed with members of the LSO in one of their Discovery education projects. In 2008, he won a trial for the Sub-Principal Trombone position with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He had also taken part in a worldwide competition for trombone quartets and his group were runners-up in the finals held in Las Vegas.

Continuing the progress of his studies at the Academy, Lewis travelled up and down the UK performing in nearly all the major UK concert venues. He also had opportunities to perform in concert halls abroad, including in Spain, Bahrain, China and Las Vegas with orchestras and chamber groups. During his fourth year, Lewis was awarded the LRAM (Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music) teaching qualification diploma and graduated from the Academy with the degree of B.A.(Mus)

Lewis is now continuing his varied career of performing and teaching. His interests span a wide variety of music, enjoying performing in orchestras, pop bands, pit bands for musicals and backing bands for singers.

In his teaching he aims to follow the example of his own admired teachers in being encouraging and constructive in his comments and to give to others what he received from them.
