Kieran Szifris began making a career in folk music 10 years ago at university in Newcastle upon Tyne whilst studying on the Folk&Traditional music degree course. He specialised in flute and was classically trained to grade 8 standard, he later found a love for Octave Mandolin.
Armed with his flute and an Octave Mandolin he started one of newcastle’s longest running folk sessions, a series of electro ceilidhs,a flute jazz folk trio and one of England’s most popular ceilidh bands (Monster Ceilidh Band).
On flute Kieran has studied under such greats as Niall Keegan, Brian Finnegan, Jean Michelle Viellon, Nuala Kennedy and Kathryn Tickell. He has one awards for his flute playing and played at festivals through out the UK
On Mandolin family Kieran continues to learn through the advanced tuteledge of American Mandolin Maestro Mike Marshall and is striving towards a solo artist. His band Monster ceilidh Band on which he plays Octave Mandolin is critically acclaimed and award wining too.
Kieran's teaching style is based in playing live music whilst building a solid working knowledge of theory and sight reading. He can teach a variety of styles including classical, folk and jazz and is able to put students through exams. Kieran also has been a peripatetic teacher with the Newcastle Music Service for a number of years.
