Learning music with me is an interactive and evolving process, and we'll work on what you want to achieve and how best we can get you to our ideal outcome.

Bedroom strummer? Live gigger? Music student? Developing professional? Youíll be covered in my three modes of music education.

The Music Teacher

When we think of a teacher, or being taught something, it usually involves someone experienced in that thing imparting knowledge on a student. This is an important part of music education, especially when it comes to early development, or learning a specific new skill on your instrument or in theory. This is only the start of a process, but weíll keep coming back to teacher mode to reaffirm new skills and techniques.

This mode is largely reliant on me (the teacher) effectively getting the message across in a way that suits your learning style and ability.

The Music Coach

A ĎCoachí is a bit more of a sporting term, which would be an apt analogy. There are a lot of parallels between effective sporting education and effective music education. You take a skill that was taught and you put that skill into practice in a number of scenarios and you train through various adaptations to hone that new skill. This is all so when itís game time, or should I say, play time, you understand your skillset on a truly fundamental and adaptable level. This will allow you to perform in both rehearsed scenarios and be flexible enough to maintain the upper hand when the unexpected inevitably strikes.

This mode requires investment from both of us to be truly effective as we collaborate, discuss, and explore musical skills, theory, techniques, and knowledge.

The Music Mentor

Mentoring is an ongoing activity and is usually the bits of the lesson that could be a bit more philosophical or existential. Perhaps you had a terrible week, practice time has been limited and when you did play, you didnít like a single note. Maybe you totally flunked on an audition or at a gig. The fact that I am a qualified counsellor often helps here but in reality, life happens to us all, and therefore our music too. And that is okay. Weíll get through it.

The opposite also applies - perhaps you are having an amazing run and bossing every gig and getting to grips with some material youíve been working on for some time. Itís important to celebrate success, enjoy those moments, but also to focus and use that positive energy to develop even further if thatís your wish.

Ultimately, music is a funny old thing and the main thing Iíve learned is this: music is simple, itís musicians that are complicated.
