My approach to teaching the guitar (and the bass guitar) is that I aim to make the lessons informal, flexible and enjoyable. In particular, I strive to ensure that the content and style of my tuition fits well with each individual's musical goals and learning needs. The emphasis is on clear explanation and step-by-step learning at the student's own pace.

Another principle I stress is that of achieving the optimum balance between - on the one hand - musical discipline (which may include such things as effective technique and a sound understanding of the fundamentals of music theory, for example) and - on the other - the importance of enjoying the learning experience itself and having fun; too much of one at the neglect of the other can be a problem if uncorrected. I cover a wide range of topics which (depending on the student's individual needs and preferences) include: repertoire, theory, technique, composition, improvisation, live performance skills, recording theory and practice etc.

Please note that, though I do charge a fee for the first lesson, prospective students are under no obligation to book any further lessons; if, after trying it, you decide that it's not for you, then that's fine!
