Instruments: Violin
Viola (as a 2nd study)
Genre/Style(s): Classical
Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

I have studied the violin for over ten years and have been fortunate enough to learn with a world-class teacher since 2017. My repertoire includes all the advanced studies of Kreutzer and Rode, unaccompanied Bach, and concertos by Mozart, Bruch, Vaughan Williams and Khachaturian. More information can be found on my website, which includes an ‘Audio and Video’ page of my playing:

I have experience of giving solo recitals as well as chamber and orchestral performances at both local and national venues and I have coached local string ensembles.

Although I completed my ABRSM exams with a grade eight distinction three years ago, I do not think exams should be central to instrumental teaching and I will not enter students for the early grades. At that stage I think the focus should be on whatever the individual needs to become competent and confident playing the instrument, which is unlikely to reflect exam requirements at any given time. If students want eventually to take more advanced grades in order to have the qualifications, then we can of course prepare for them.

Early experience of playing with other musicians and performing is important, however, and the music room in my family home can accommodate small solo and chamber recitals with piano. The local music competitions at Grantham and Colsterworth offer good performance opportunities and I used to play in them myself, solo and in ensembles, winning the Open String Repertoire Trophy at Grantham three times. Students can be entered for these as appropriate and I have good working relationships with local accompanists, who can rehearse and perform with them.

I am willing to teach viola as well as violin, as a second study: I enjoy playing the instrument but think it is important to develop violin skills first.

Good instruments can be supplied in all sizes for students’ use.

Limited spaces are available, for committed learners with dedicated support at home. We start with a free consultation lesson and, if that goes well, then a three-month trial both ways, to be sure it will be an enjoyable learning relationship.

I will consider mature five-year-olds with good parental support, and I have decided not to teach players older than I am myself, so that makes the current maximum age fifteen.
