Notes:

What I teach, and how:
As a drummer, tabla player and percussionist, flexibility is mandatory. Itís essential for performing with musicians, teaching and learning too. Some students like to focus on exams and grading, others want to be able to play in bands, and a few just want to play the fastest double bass drum rolls in the world! No one wants an environment in which attention isnít paid to the student's likes and dislikes. I therefore try to tailor my approach to what each student's individual goals are, while never forgetting that there are some basic principles such as perfect counting, timekeeping and listening which a true drummer cannot do without!
I started off as a kid into Indian Classical Music and Heavy Metal (funny combination huh?!) and discovered the beauty in many other styles of music as I grew up, so I realise how important it is to broaden the horizons of my students whilst helping them get really proficient in their favourite styles.

For tabla players, there is a huge repertoire of classical compositions from the various traditional "gharanas" of varying levels of difficulty. I teach both vocalisation as well as performance of this material. At the same time I also teach the folk, fusion, and modern tabla rhythms that Bollywood has made popular.

For drum kit students I encourage the learning of real drum beats, safe and ergonomic drumming technique and playing along to songs right from the beginning, as well as gradually getting acquainted with drum sheet music which sounds more intimidating than it is! Over time I introduce the rudiments as well as the more formal technical aspects of drumming according to the studentís preference. I also play guitar, bass and keyboards and use these as well as backing tracks to develop a drum student's accompaniment and band skills. I can prepare interested students for Grade exams - Trinity, Trinity Rock & Pop and Rockschool syllabuses for Drum Kit and the PRSSV for Tabla - however exams are by no means mandatory.
I teach face-to-face as well as online and may be able to travel to teach you in your own home if you are local.

My experience:
I am a classically trained tabla player under the tutelage of Pandit Shivshankar Ray and have performed in a large number of concerts in the UK and abroad, both as a soloist and an accompanist. I have been teaching since 1995 and currently teach tabla at Swaminarayan Independent School in Wembley, London to groups of children at beginner and intermediate level as well as a number of private students in one-to-one and small-group classes.

On Drum Kit I was initially self-taught on drum kit for nearly a decade, before being formally trained Bill Collis of Chiswick, having made the most of the aural and music-reading skills I'd gained from learning Piano and Violin. In addition to recordings and performances I have taught drum kit since 2005, and have a number of private students as well as currently teaching group classes for adults and children at Canada Water in a Southwark Council-funded initiative.
I look forward to helping turn your percussive dreams into reality!
