Alexander Norman is a graduate in music from Royal Holloway College, University of London, he held both organ and bass choral scholarships whilst studying. Alex completed a Masters in Choral Conducting at Birmingham Conservatoire, under the tuition of Paul Spicer (The Finzi Singers). Whilst studying, Alex gave regular performances on the organ and piano, both as a soloist and accompanist. As an organist he appears on The Choir of Royal Holloway’s first Hyperion release, ‘Hail, Queen of Heaven’ (sacred choral music by Rihards Dubra) and he accompanied the choir for broadcasts on BBC Radios 2,3 and 4. Alex is currently Organist of the Methodist Central Hall (Coventry) and piano accompanist to two choirs resident in Birmingham. He is planning to sit the ATCL diploma in piano performance in November.

As a choral director, Alex gained recognition through the work of Convivium Singers. This young semi-professional chamber choir has recorded several cds, including a disc of choral music by the 17th century composer Peter Philips, which received a five-star review in 'Choir&Organ' magazine. They were also prize-winners at the Tolosa Choral Contest 2011, and have performed at choir festivals in Italy, Czech Republic and Sardinia.

Alex's academic interests include music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, performance practice, choral music, 20th century British music (particularly Howells and Vaughan Williams), and contemporary choral music (particularly James MacMillan). He has recently started part-time study for a PhD in historical musicology, focusing on the performance of vocal music by Henry Purcell and his contemporaries.
