Music has always been my first love and my passion since I was young, but it’s only recently that I decided to have a go at making my passion into my livelihood.
I love teaching - over the last 10 years I have had lots of opportunity to do this working for my local Buddhist Centre, for much of that time running their Education Service working with children in schools, teaching adults at the classes there, and even running the choir there for a while. I love to communicate what is important.
I believe that music is one of the most important things in this world - a basic human need and something that is alive in everyone, even people who see themselves as ‘unmusical’ or ‘tone deaf’. It can bring beauty and meaning, expressing truths and emotions that go beyond words. Being able to express myself through playing music has been totally crucial to me in my life, and it is exciting to think that through this work I might be able to facilitate that for others.
I had piano lessons throughout my childhood, but I’m afraid I didn’t engage with them as I could have! It was only after I gave them up that I found a way explore and play the music I really loved. Wanting to take this deeper I came back to formal study 4 or 5 years ago, and earlier this year passed my grade 8 practical exam with distinction. I can therefore relate to both children and adult learners!
In the short time I have been teaching I am learning a lot about what my values are as a piano teacher: to help the student feel connected and at ease, to help them have confidence and patience with themselves, and to have fun; and also to challenge them, to bring out their potential, and to give them the skills they need to become the sort of musician they want to be.
