I am a peripatetic and music centre teacher, principally teaching violin and viola, but also beginner piano, also teaching privately in and around the Leeds and Huddersfield area. My approach to teaching is to not only teach the instrument (technique etc.), but to expose the student to many aspects of music, which I believe improves the standard and understanding of the music that is being played - I incorporate music theory and listening to pieces in a wide range of styles and genres into my lessons.

Since starting the viola when I was 11 years old, I have made sure to take any opportunities that have been passed my way. I have played in many different orchestras, such as the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (2006-2010, principal viola 2008-2010), the National Youth Strings Academy (2009) and more recently, in the Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra as principal viola (2010-present). This has allowed me to develop many skills, not just in ensemble playing, but in punctuality and organisational skills.

I attended the Junior Royal Northern College of Music for three years (2007-2010), studying disciplines such as viola (under Alex Robertson), piano, conducting (under Ewa Strusinska), aural, music theory, string quartet and larger ensembles. These experiences introduced me to a whole new way of thinking of music and how in which to apply this to my performances.

While studying music at the University of Huddersfield, I have covered topics such as solo performance, ensemble playing (in a string quartet, piano quintet and orchestras), musicology, analysis and composition. My aim is to apply for a MMus at the University, in research-informed performance, investigating the music of twentieth-century Eastern European composers, such as Penderecki and Part.

I have also played on film soundtracks for the musician, Bill Ryder-Jones, former guitarist in the Liverpool band The Coral. These soundtracks include Leave Taking (2009), a short film funded by Northwest Vision and Media and the UK Film Council, directed by Laurence Easeman, and Piggy (2012), directed by Kieron Hawkes.

I perform regularly with the India Rose Strings, playing for weddings and functions across the country. I also am a recording and session musician, playing in multiple genres.

During the years of being taught music in school, the only musical careers that were made known to us were either in teaching or in orchestras. I feel that these opportunities, which I have been lucky enough to have, should be made aware of, as, through personal experience, I feel that it has made me more of an all-rounded player, acceptant of new styles and ideas, a skill that I believe students should be exposed to.
