I believe that learning should be both enjoyable and rewarding and am able to equip students with the tools to learn independently. Music has always been my passion and I am committed to helping students to develop their understanding and abilities in the subject. My priorities in teaching are the learning and enjoyment of students, while paying particular attention to their individual needs. I plan my teaching around a student's personal interests, experiences and what they need to learn to achieve their goals. I am able to teach music, from beginner to degree level and to all ages.
Music has been my main interest since I can remember and I have gained a wide range of musical experience. My main instrument is the oboe, on which I have played in various orchestras and ensembles. I also studied piano at school and university, and can play saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, recorder and drum kit. I have experience in teaching, performing, creating, arranging, transcribing and studying music in a wide range of genres and styles, including the great variety of 'classical' styles and genres, jazz, folk, reggae, rock, pop, soul, electronic dance music and various traditional styles of music from round the World. I am an experienced user of music technology both when teaching and in my own creative work. I regularly use Sibelius, Reason and Cubase software, and set up and ran a recording studio for a youth centre before I began teaching in schools.
I am a qualified secondary school teacher of music with five years of experience of teaching in comprehensive schools in East London. I enjoy and am experienced in teaching students in a variety of forms of music making and study, including composition, improvisation, performance, aural skills, music history, theory and analysis, harmony, counterpoint and music technology.
