Notes:
I AM A PATIENT, FRIENDLY PROFESSIONAL CELLO TEACHER AND CHAMBER MUSICIAN/COACH WITH MANY YEARS' EXPERIENCE and a well-qualified and properly-trained musician. I have been teaching cello at Keele University (where I also direct orchestral sectionals and coach/play in chamber group modules) since 1999, and privately from my home in Madeley (Staffs) for even longer. Currently I am teaching a wide range of private students from Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire.
ALL AGES AND ABILITIES ARE VERY WELCOME, especially adults (including absolute beginners and those who wish to resume playing after a break) and grades V-VIII, diploma and university/conservatoire level students. Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons. (Please note that there is no pressure to take exams if you do not wish to do so.)
IF YOU WOULD LIKE HELP (FROM BEGINNERS TO ADVANCED) WITH:
- any aspect of cello playing/technique
- preparation for auditions, performances or exams
- fingerings and/or bowings for any solo, chamber or orchestral parts
- ensemble playing and choice of suitable repertoire
- or choosing a new cello, bow or strings
DON'T HESITATE TO CONTACT ME!
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO RING AND DISCUSS YOUR REQUIREMENTS AND/OR ARRANGE A TRIAL LESSON/COACHING SESSION if you would like to do so.
(I have an IN-HOUSE CELLO AVAILABLE FOR USE DURING TRIAL LESSONS so that beginners can try playing before committing to renting/buying an instrument! I can also offer advice on acquiring a suitable instrument.)
IN ADDITION TO REGULAR AND TRIAL LESSONS, CONSULTATION, ONE-OFF and OCCASIONAL LESSONS ARE ALL AVAILABLE. JUST CHOOSE WHATEVER SUITS YOU BEST!
I AM VERY FLEXIBLE REGARDING FREQUENCY OF LESSONS FOR ADULTS/ADVANCED STUDENTS who cannot or prefer not to attend on a strictly regular basis.
I'M PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN TEACHING/CORRECTING TECHNIQUE PROPERLY AND TAILORING CELLO LESSONS INDIVIDUALLY in order to help students play to the very best of their ability and enjoy their music-making to the full.
I HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE HELPING SEVERAL STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL DIFFICULTIES (eg ARTHRITIS) to adapt their playing accordingly.
SOME OF MY ADULT/ADVANCED STUDENTS CHOOSE TO FOCUS HEAVILY ON CHAMBER MUSIC, dedicating much of their lesson time to studying, preparing and playing cello duets and other chamber music.
I ALSO OFFER CHAMBER MUSIC COACHING (including one-off sessions) for string and/or mixed ensembles at all levels, beginners to advanced. I've had much experience helping players to select suitable repertoire and improve their ensemble playing, whether for exams, assessments, concerts, competitions, or just for fun! Whatever your age, experience or ability, please feel free to contact me for suggestions, help and advice, either individually or as a group.
TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: I studied Music at Manchester University, where I was taught by Bernard Gregor-Smith (cellist with the Lindsay String Quartet) and received chamber music coaching from Ronnie Birks (second violinist with the Lindsay String Quartet). I then completed a postgraduate violoncello performance course at the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Mike Evans from the Dartington School of Music and gaining my ARCM (Associate of the Royal College of Music) Violoncello Performing Diploma.
MADELEY IS SITUATED in North Staffordshire bordering Cheshire and Shropshire and is close to Keele University, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Crewe, Nantwich and Market Drayton. I live very close to Madeley High School.
