David studied Music at Cardiff University receiving First Class Honours, four Cardiff University Scholarships including two consecutive awards for ‘best academic performance’, and the Morfydd Owen Prize for ‘exceptional academic performance’. His compositional development continued at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, where he was the runner up for the inaugural Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Scholarship and received an AHRC Studentship covering all the expenses associated with the Mst in Music Composition - his essay Cultural Rootlessness in the Music of Unsuk Chin was kept as an example of ‘exceptional academic work’. He also received a HCR Service Award for his 'contribution to postgraduate life'. David is the first person to read for a PhD in Music Composition at University of Cambridge. In 2014 he was shortlisted for an Arts Council of Wales Advanced Study Scholarship. He has also been the recipient of 5 Seton Cavendish Travel Grant Awards, a Downing College Association Alumni Student Fund Award, and a Downing College Bursary.

David has over 10 years teaching experience and has worked with a considerable number of students from absolute beginners to those studying at post-degree level. It goes without saying that age, ability, and experience are not barriers to learning. Get in touch, he is sure he can help you!

David is a composer. His music has been described as 'the highlight of the evening', 'no mean feat', 'exhilarating', and has been performed by many different ensembles including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Singers, Britten Sinfonia, Notes Inegales, Orion Orchestra, Magnard Ensemble, Ensemble ISIS, Galliard Ensemble, Carducci Quartet, Richard Watkins, Huw Watkins, Richard Casey, Lisa Nelsen, and many others. He frequently received private commissions and has worked professionally as a composer for the British Library, Centre of the Cell, and the University of Cambridge Communications Department. Upcoming works include his third opera, Scenes from A Void, which will receive 3 performances later this year as the ADC Theatre's Copus Lateshow, generously funded by the Fletcher Players. His composition Ten Acre Riots for solo piano will be performed in December this year by Psappha's Benjamin Powell, generously supported by a Psappha Composer's Bursary. In 2017 David will be working with the Cambridge Graduate Orchestra to produce a new composition... So keep an eye open for performances!

David has performed as part of a huge number of ensembles; male voice and mixed choirs; as part of an unaccompanied electric guitar ensemble, as an electric guitarist with an orchestra, as a featured soloist with a jazz band (at Brecon Jazz Festival and the Great Northern Jazz Festival), in week-long runs of musicals, in pop punk, rock, and metal bands; as a classical guitarist being selected as a finalist for producing recordings of his own compositions; as a cornet player in a multiple brass bands; as a conductor in a production his own opera, as an appointed conductor to a choir, and as a conductor for many small ensembles; and as a musician in many function bands.
