Experienced Guitar Teacher offering Professional Guitar Tuition in Brighton & Hove

My name's Ben Cox-Smith, I am a professional Guitar player and music teacher in Brighton, I am currently offering courses in Flamenco, Acoustic, Electric, Slide or Dobro Guitar (flamenco, fingerstyle, ragtime, blues, slide, lap slide, folk, rock, metal) for pupils seeking one-to-one or group lessons.

I have 30 years playing experience, 10 years teaching experience and 20 years experience performing in a plethora of folk, grunge and ragtime groups as well as solo blues, fingerstyle, classical and flamenco performances at private and public functions and studio session work.

I believe repertoire, the ability to produce varied and interesting accopaniment and effective practice are the most important aspects of a musician's arsenal and, from the very beginning, teach guitar and music theory catering to the music tastes of the pupil, be it Rock, acoustic, folk, metal, fingerstyle, classical or slide

I also offer advance as well as beginner/intermediate courses in Fingerstyle, ragtime, slide, dobro and general song writing accompaniment. These involve a more concise look at:

• Improvisation & Understanding of Musical Conversation
• Ear Training to help you Learn to intuitively play what's in your head
• Harmony & Theory (Understanding music as a language)
•Technique & Dexterity (providing the skills to perform advance styles as well as effective practice technique to advance as quickly as possible)
- Arranagement and accompaniment for songwriting and how to avoid getting stuck in one way of writing and/or playing

All students will have the option to play a vast array of Guitars in my possession to get a feel for the right guitar to suit their playing

My Music History

I was brought up in a very musical family constantly listening to Classical, Jazz and folk revival and attending folk and fingerstyle sessions and ceilidhs from a young age. At 5 years old I took up the guitar alongside piano, violin and viola and gained an invaluable and comprehensive understanding of musical theory on a number of different instruments and genres. By 15 I moved to electric guitar, playing rock, grunge and metal and gaining experience with drummers and other musicians to learn the art of making musical conversation. In my 20s I returned to the acoustic and studied the ragtime and fingerstyle masters along with delta and country slide and dobro (lapslide), performing at various events and venues as well as providing a well sought after dobro session service for studios. For the last two years I have been intensively studying flamenco palos and techniques under a number of maestros both in the UK and in Spain.

I currently charge £25 per hour for lessons or 5 lessons block booked for £100

When possible, I request students to practise at least 30 minutes a day on work set to help move the progress of the pupil in the right direction. Effective practice technique is one of the most important areas I teach and, if done correctly, you'll be astonished at the progress you can make in a very short time from 30 minutes per day!
